What This Calculator Estimates
This calculator computes your grade point average by weighting each course's grade points by its credit hours, then dividing by total credits attempted.
Formula / Method Used
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ(Credit Hours), summed across all courses entered.
Worked Example
Courses with grade points 4.0 (3 credits), 3.0 (3 credits), and 3.7 (4 credits) give a weighted total of 12 + 9 + 14.8 = 35.8, divided by 10 total credits, for a GPA of 3.58.
How to Interpret the Result
This GPA reflects only the courses entered. For a full cumulative GPA, include every course from every term you want counted.
Common Mistakes
- Using letter grades directly instead of converting to grade points first.
- Forgetting to weight by credit hours, which skews the average.
- Leaving out repeated courses your school counts differently.
- Mixing standard and weighted (honors/AP) scales inconsistently.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does this GPA calculator estimate?
It calculates your grade point average by weighting each course's grade points by its credit hours.
What is the standard GPA scale?
Most US schools use a 4.0 scale where A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, and F=0, though some schools use different weighting for plus/minus grades.
How are credit hours used in GPA?
Each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours before averaging, so a 4-credit class affects GPA more than a 1-credit class.
Does this calculate cumulative GPA?
Yes, enter all courses across all terms you want included to get a cumulative GPA.
Can I use this for weighted (honors/AP) GPA?
Enter the weighted grade points your school assigns for honors or AP courses instead of the standard scale.
