Estimate the final exam grade needed to reach your desired course grade. This calculator is useful when your course uses a weighted final exam and you want a quick planning estimate before the term ends.
What This Calculator Estimates
This calculator estimates the final exam score needed to reach a target course grade. It assumes your current grade represents the non-final portion of the course and that the final exam weight is applied once to determine the final average. Results are estimates only.
Formula / Method Used
Needed final exam grade = (desired grade - current grade x remaining weight) / final exam weight
In percent form, the remaining weight is 1 - final exam weight after converting the exam weight percentage to a decimal.
Worked Example
If your current course grade is 84.5%, the final exam is worth 25%, and you want a final course grade of 90%, the calculator first applies your current grade to the remaining 75% of the course and then solves for the final exam score needed to reach 90% overall.
What the Result Means
A result between 0% and 100% means the target is theoretically reachable under the assumptions you entered. A result above 100% means the target is likely out of reach without extra credit or a different grading rule. A result below 0% means you are already on track to finish at or above your target.
Common Mistakes
- Using the wrong final exam weight.
- Entering a current grade that already includes the final exam.
- Ignoring extra credit or category-specific grading rules.
- Forgetting that some instructors round final grades differently.
Limitations / Disclaimer
This calculator provides grade estimates only and is not an official school record. Actual results can vary based on your syllabus, grading scale, teacher rounding, extra credit, and category weighting details.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does this grade calculator estimate?
It estimates the final exam grade needed to reach a desired final course grade based on your current grade and final exam weight.
What if the needed final exam grade is over 100 percent?
That means the target grade is not achievable under the assumptions entered unless extra credit or a different weighting method changes the outcome.
What if the needed final exam grade is zero or less?
That means your current course standing is already enough to reach the desired final grade under the weighting entered.
Are grade results exact?
Results are estimates based on the percentages you enter. Different school grading rules, rounding, and extra credit can change the final outcome.
