Estimate how claiming earlier or later than full retirement age may affect a monthly Social Security benefit. This is a simplified planning tool only. It does not produce official Social Security results, and all results on this page are estimates.
What This Calculator Estimates
This calculator estimates how a monthly benefit may change if benefits are claimed before or after full retirement age. It is meant for rough planning only. It does not include full government rules, earnings history details, taxation, spousal benefits, or survivor rules.
Formula / Method Used
This page uses a simple estimate-only approach:
- If claiming before full retirement age, the monthly estimate is reduced by about 6% per year early.
- If claiming after full retirement age, the monthly estimate is increased by about 8% per year delayed, up to age 70.
- If an annual COLA is entered, the estimate applies that growth for the number of years between full retirement age and claiming age when claiming later.
This is not an official formula and should not be treated as an official benefit calculation.
Worked Example
If your estimated full retirement age benefit is $2,200 per month, your full retirement age is 67, and you claim at 65, this calculator applies a simple early-claiming reduction to estimate a lower monthly benefit. If you claim later than full retirement age, it applies a delayed-claiming increase instead.
What the Result Means
The adjusted monthly benefit shows the estimate after the claiming-age adjustment. The annual benefit multiplies that estimate by 12. The note below the result gives a simple comparison against claiming at full retirement age so you can quickly see whether the estimate is lower, about the same, or higher.
Common Mistakes
- Treating this estimate as an official Social Security result.
- Ignoring the effect of personal earnings history and government updates.
- Forgetting that real COLA adjustments can change year to year.
- Using a full retirement age that does not match your actual eligibility rules.
