What This Calculator Estimates

This calculator estimates routine vehicle ownership cost per month and per year. It combines your monthly payment, insurance, fuel, and maintenance so you can compare different vehicles or check how a car fits into your budget.

Formula / Method Used

Monthly vehicle cost is calculated by adding the four monthly inputs together. The annual estimate is then calculated as monthly total x 12. The calculator does not weight any category differently or forecast future price changes.

Worked Example

If your monthly payment is $450, insurance is $160, fuel is $180, and maintenance is $75, the total monthly cost is $865. Multiplied across a year, that becomes an estimated annual ownership cost of $10,380.

What the Result Means

The monthly total gives you a quick carrying-cost estimate for the vehicle. The annual figure helps when you compare car ownership against other budget priorities or when you want to see whether a less expensive car meaningfully reduces total transportation cost.

Common Mistakes

  1. Leaving out irregular costs such as registration, parking, tires, or major repairs.
  2. Using a fuel estimate from one driving pattern and applying it to a very different commute.
  3. Ignoring depreciation when comparing ownership options.
  4. Comparing a new payment with old insurance or maintenance numbers that no longer fit the vehicle.
